The art of the printmaker combines the free creativity of producing the image with the discipline of following the processes of the technique being used. This mix of freedom and focus is something I find deeply satisfying.

I have recently returned to printmaking after a lapse of some years. I had paused because I had become increasingly concerned about both the health and environmental impact of the inks and cleaning products routinely used in so many of the processes, particularly etching.

Now working from my studio at home I am taking advantage of the modern, high quality inks that are simply cleaned with soap and water to return to lino cutting and monoprints. Again, I take pleasure in combining the freedom of monoprints with the careful cutting techniques needed for lino cuts.

I find I rarely follow the traditional system of printing a limited edition run of identical prints. I prefer to experiment and simply play with backgrounds, multiple colours and overlaying blocks on top and across each other. So, although rooted in the traditional methods, my prints tend to be one off originals rather than editions.
